About Meramec

Located along the scenic Meramec River in east-central Missouri, Meramec State Park and the surrounding area has been a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts since it became a state park in 1927. Located just over 60 miles from St. Louis, the rugged bluffs, caves and forests of the river valley and surrounding hills were recognized as natural treasures early on the the state park system. Then, in the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began doing what they do best: constructing trails, lodging, picnic shelters, and other facilities in the park, making it an even more popular destination for those in the area.

The park is rich in its natural heritage. Several miles of the Meramec River are protected inside the park, creating a still natural home for many plants and wildlife. Several springs can be found, as well as over 40 caves. The most popular is Fisher Cave, offering many unique and outstanding features. Visitors to the cave will see such wonders as low and narrow passages alongside streams, huge rooms, stalagmites, stalactites, columns, draperies, and so much more. Some rooms even include preserved wildlife and bear claw marks.

A remote section of the park also includes the 461-acre Meramec Upland Forest Natural Area. This natural area features glades, sinkholes, caves, and meadows. Many rare plants and animals can be found here, and is one of the best places in the park to find solitude.

Water recreation activities, including floating and fishing, are very popular at the park and along the Meramec River. Canoe and raft rental are available at the park store, and includes shuttle transportation, paddles, and life jackets. Many people enjoy the scenic views along the float, so weekdays are much less crowded. Fisherman can try their hand in Missouri's river with the greatest variety of fish. Over half of the state's species of fish can be found in this river, along with many other aquatic species.

Over ten miles of trails can be found here, taking hikers past numerous caves and along the river. The 10 mile Wilderness Trail also offers backpacking campsites located along the trail, allowing for overnight hikes in the park. Some of the other trails offer their own unique features, or serve as a connector trail between certain facilities in the park.

Overnight opportunities include primitive campsites, modern campsites with full hook-ups, twenty cabins, and a 22 room motel with conference center. Lodging facilities are coordinated at the park store, which also includes supplies, toiletries, tackle, firewood, and gifts. A small grill is also available, and serves snacks, sandwiches, drinks, and more.
